The NoLa(new orleans) xpats are @ it again, & OOOOH do they bring the party!!!

hey we kicked it NYC last week she’s AWESOME! look for more on her & Automatic Panic! her production partner out of San Antonio. Anyway, here’s the video for her single “KISSED my best friend” I think she’s coming to austin again soon, or was just here anyway, i’ll find out & update the post. enjoy the video…
artist: badmouth genre: minimal techno with vox

like the simple loopy vox. all in all this one is a good cross between techno and synthpop (without the loads of words). ok ok, there also is a matt dear thing too, but much more straight forward (for better or worse).
artist: adam freeland genre: adam freeland

no we want your soul here. warning this song has no breaks. this latest EP (HATE) feels like some sort of call an response the french touch invasion (daftpunk, justice, ed banger). highly compressed, everything is warm, stops stutters, robot funk, simple 1,2 beats.
regardless, i honed in on the song most likely to be a dario argento zombie attack song. arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhhhhhh.
artist: milanese genre: dub grime step hop

this style feels old and new to me. of course i heard plenty of cyberpunk soundtracks for the last two decades. i’ll not say something to the effect that this would be fitting in a william gibson soundtrack. but it does. from what i can make out, the lyric subject matter fits too.
artist: underworld genre: underworld

by far my favorite file in the folder. the album is OK, maybe i’m just a sucker for the old stuff. for various reasons i’ll stay positive, definitely listen to it before you buy. oh well, this is a good weekend track.
artist: erykah badu genre: breaks bass rmx
found this in my download folder, isn’t new but still a good rmx. pretty much the opposite of shania twain.

ok, kusser and i will be at the whiskey bar this friday. i’ll be spinning a little (victor talked me into it) and fred will be doing a whole lot of visuals. i’ll try to talk him into switching places with me for a little bit.
the music, well at least from me you’ll hear what is on the blog pretty much. no secrets there.
artist: data80 genre: vocoder house
had to add it to the radio, umm… has cheesy disco references, precisely why i’m posting it.
Here’s a slice from Aphex Twin’s live show at this years Coachella
Aphex Twin Live@Coachella trk14
and…..a dubstep tune
artist: boxcutter genre: idm 4×4

uncharacteristic for this artist, it comes across (in my mind) as a detroit-ish track. alex smoke-ish?
well usually he does dub-step, breaks, almost dnb flavor type stuff. the entire Glyphic album is great. so this track doesn’t represent it well, but i like so:
artist: heights of abraham genre: space groove

once again, i hear this on somafm all the time. the songs strength rides on the bass synth, its by far the loudest thing in the track, until the drums kick in at 3:45. this is old, like from the early nineties, an eon in electronic music. i guess it proves that musical minimal electronic tracks have the ability to stand the test of time. for such a seemingly disposable genre, this one sticks around nicely.
Okay..I could use the “FAIL” about the MBM show that didn’t happen (thanks Joel for pre-buying tickets), but this blog is about positives. Right.
After being turned away at the door of the MBM no show and making my mom babysit for an evening, I promised my wife a dinner and a show. And by golly we we’re gonna have one if I had to tie 2 frat boys together and have them fight over a can of Naddy Light. But luckily it didn’t have to come to this. A good friend over at Esther’s was able to get us in for the 10 pm show. In all my years in the ATX I had never been to an Esther’s Follies show.
Man, I need to get out more. That shit was better than Saturday Night Live. More topical than a fat kid’s skin cream. They even had magic and shit, yo!
So if you haven’t been ever or in a while, i highly recommend it.
artist: cim genre: idm

digging this old-ish idm tune from cim. a friend gave me this in an album exchange a couple years ago. listened to it but never really gave it my attention till today. definitely a flashback to the idm heyday. it is kinda weird but this makes me want to listen to old killing joke for some reason (no musical relation).
artist: u-ziq genre: folk
when i arrived at an empty club deville last night i knew that the angel of doom had descended upon austin. no people, no stage setup, only a sign that said: “meat beat manifesto show cancelled”. yup.
this is the 3rd time i’ve bought tickets to an event i was sure would sellout and only then to have the show be cancelled.
1: King Diamond @ Emos
2: Morrissey @ The Backyard
3: Meat Beat Manifesto @ Club Deville
yeah yeah i have dumb taste in music. regardless, i believe it is my fault the canceled. if i just would have NOT pre-bought my tickets, everyone would have had a wonderful evening. everyone would have danced. everyone (single) would have went home with their soul bunny. everyone married would never get divorced. disease would cease, plastic would be biodegradable, sugar ants would not infest my kitchen…

Here’s another Starkey tune. This one is the IDM one. You remember IDM don’t you. Just don’t say it outloud
Some IDM heroes from the past are keeping fresh by doing some dubstep. Awesome. its a natural branch /evolution. These guys make me want to hop a plane to Europe just to see them.
artist: distance genre: dubstep

some people seem to like this guy more than Burial. bleak, dark and bass driven = good. the “first there was darkness, then came strength” sample is from where?

After chainsawing some trees in my backyard (literally… not a euphemism for illegal activity), I made my way to my local head shop. The guy behind the counter recognized me from the Bass Nectar show and we had a chat about local electronic music and shows. I couldn’t help but notice what they had playing over the store stereo system. Nothing like getting turned on to some new music at the head shop.

Yea its the weekend coming up and the MBM show is Saturday. So take this as your Friday and Saturday post and someone less hungover than me on Sunday can post:
Starkey
i had a hard time deciding which out of three trks of his to post. he’s got a shed load of mixes here if you want to download some
the single trk i chose has a little of everything thrown in. his other ones are a little more dubstep or idm.
all good.

location: club deVille
official band website: http://www.meatbeatmanifesto.com/
goes without saying that it will be a great show. highly recommended. last time i went to go see em it was sold out so i guess i should get my tickets ahead of time. $12 in advance.
i’ll need to post some tracks i suppose, fuck they’ll need to be ripped from actual CDs.
artist: dillinja genre: kinda breaks + dnb
even with the dead guy’s sample i still like it. kinda of interesting that this style is more popular than ever. super simple break with mean bassline works every time.
