AMODA is putting on their annual laptop battle saturday March 8th!
$7 non-member, $4 members, FREE for interactive badge wearers.
what is a laptop battle you ask? since i did it last year and i’m doing it this year i feel like i’m qualified to this question.
each contestant is allowed a laptop and a solitary midi controller. no traditional instruments or microphones (unless built into the laptop). you got 3 minutes to show the crowd your best stuff. if the judges and crowd don’t like it you’re out. it is deathmatch style with 16 contestants dueling in pairs until their is one left standing. if you make it through the first round there are 3 more to go.
this really is just a battle of the bands concept, albeit one man bands, without the outrageously long setup and tear down times. also most battle of the bands type events are usually not very diverse. laptop battlers can play whatever the fuck they want: DnB, glitch, techno, hiphop, house, funk, punk, crunk, noise, whatever. you are going to hear songs, not see someone play exactly like stevie ray vaughn (i had to take a shot). some of the songs are good and some are bad but all in all it is a really fun event.
i’ll admit it can be disheartening to see an act you like not make it through to the next round, log2(16) = 4 rounds, but it is always fun. it also brings out the competitive spirit in electronic composers that usually never play or only play to 2 people at some shitty house party.
honestly i recommend this event over anything else that weekend. it is a great way to kick off the music portion of SxSW and is usually a lot more fun and diverse than most SxSW events.
worst case scenario is that you get to see 16 acts you never have heard before. throw in lots of beer with the agony of defeat for good measure.
after someone wins a round they have it rigged so lightning comes down from the sky and the winner absorbs all the song power from the defeated. there can be only one!
artist: rob acid genre: 4×4 idm influenced techno

it took a bit for this track to grow on me. lots of stuff going on here, it builds. good programming music.
i found a another place i love this type of stuff, the gym. i can still focus on working out while listening to good music and all the while i don’t have to hear promiscuous girl. start rant. whomever decides that the gold’s gym must blare the top 40 station at 11 must be tone deaf or dumb but most likely both. isn’t the top 40 target market 12yr old girls. last time i checked there were NO 12yr old girls at golds gym. lots of latin dudes, various in shape women, a couple big manly roiders, NO 12yr old girls. on rare occasions they have the classic rock station playing stuff like ronnie james DIO. at that point it feels more like the target audience is being, well, targeted. or the urban station, either one, whatever. both play stuff i can cope with and even like (fucking DIO!)
i know you can’t please everyone but for fucks sake you could at least not play the worst music in the recorded history. i’d rather listen Barney singing xmas songs (i’m an atheist). here is an idea, NO RADIO. then everyone would be happy and i wouldn’t be making myself deaf by having to turn up my sansdisk to block out some 10th generation NOFX clone.
to be honest if i didn’t acquire an mp3 player i would have honestly switched gyms, top 40 is that repulsive to me. yes i have problems, but everyone should have this problem. so yeah, if you decide to start attending a gym get a cheap sansdisk mp3 player and load it up.
end rant

Carl Stone
Performance 11 :: Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 :: Ballet Austin at the Firehouse
(3002 Guadalupe) :: 8pm-10pm :: $10 for AMODA Members :: $12 general :: Tickets at
End of an Ear (2209 S 1st St) :: All ages
So far i recommend this show, but the following is a rant that has nothing to do with Carl Stone.
Ambient / IDM laptop musicians that do REAL improv or composition (meaning plugging notes in on the fly or manipulating in real time) are good. I for one am swearing off Merzbow noise shows where the shows starts and ends with the clicking of the space bar. This is my def of not good.
Don’t get me wrong, i don’t care if you hit play in itunes but throw me a bone then. Smash something, flail around like a fish or bleed. i don’t care, but setting up a laptop, clicking the space bar and then proceeding to play FREECELL on stage for 45 mins is kinda lame. playing cards is boring to do and boring to watch, much less on stage.
Couldn’ t i just listen to the stuff at home (much cheaper) while playing portal? There are exceptions to this, if you or some-else has taken the time to do on the fly video THEN that can be a substitute for human activity.
I’m thinking of kusser here, but i know for a fact that he ain’t playing freecell. He is doing his video and beats mixing and mangling live in real time. Every show is different and he puts a lot work into it and it shows.
If an electronic artist is actually composing or mangling something on the spot, sign me up with bells. i’ll sit through an otherwise physically boring performance if a one of a kind aurally, visually or mentally stimulating movement is happening live before me. i personally do electronic ableton improv on a semi-regular basis and it can be fun to do and fun to listen to. Even though it doesn’t seem like much fun to see me frantically tweak knobs and click a lot.
All i’m saying here is if all you are going to do is show up and press play, why not ship the venue an ipod with your name tag on it. put the ipod on the stage and plug the ipod into the PA. when done, ship the ipod to the next venue. it’d be cheaper and would most likely get more press (at least for the first one to do it). of course a minimalist audio visual brooklyn artist has most likely already beat you to the punch, but it is worth trying in your town!
end rant
DISCLAIMER: i’m confident that MR CARL STONE won’t be guilty of the above rant. He seems to be doing stuff and his music seems quite good.
the firehouse space on guadalupe is a cool place to hold this event. i saw Xiu Xiu there once, for an AMODA event too.
artist: Poni Hoax genre: electro-krautrock
the build and drone reminds me of the old suicide, hawkwind and neubatten. tamer a bit too. the terms i would have used to classify this in the 70s and early 80s no longer hold their original and useful meaning.
artist: koudlam genre: melodic techno
gomi just pointed this out to me so.
its so good i’m just turning around and posting it immediately. it makes my day, hopefully it will yours.
the video at his site is bad ass too.
artist: KKKhemical bros genre: beer commercial music
yeah yeah i normally won’t post chemical bros. i don’t hate em, its just that they get enough exposure. regardless, minus the crappy vocals (yeah they like 80s wax trax) i like the music. i need to troll for an instrumental version of the song. dare i say, it borders on progressive trance. Hence the tarnce category. tarnce tarnce tarnce!
i’m sure this song will find a home in a alcohol or auto commercial.
having said that, i kinda like this track. a bunch. shoot me in person. all i can say is that nick drake and matthew dear both have car commercials so rock on! thanks to bobzombie for pointing this track out to me.
artist: modeselektor vs otto von schirach genre: electro bass
so this is nothing like Otto’s set in new orleans. nothing. While cool, it was had much more in common with the Richard Devine school of thought. Which most likely suited the club better.
Otto’s latest posting on myspace is much more like this track. so his miami bass self description becomes more equivalent.
Drop yer pants or Romance in the Club i think it is…
artist: sasha genre: techno

as i get older i definitely am more drawn to repetitive drone stuff, but this isn’t really that repetitive or droney. i’m just saying that i’m loosing grey matter.
artist: Etienne De Crecy genre: robot funk

fuck, suck and luck pretty much sum it up.
i think the suck usually comes first though.
artist: Midnight Juggernauts genre: synth pop funk

i even heard one reviewer say “neverending story and daft punk” when describing. well i’ll let the reader decide.
artist: aksak maboul genre: jazz / proto idm from from 1977
i like to hear music that influences modern day styles. this one feels like it is at home with Can and Dark Side of the Moon. to be honest i have been listening to the entire album for for the last 3 years and never knew that it was so old. i always assumed it was from this decade.
african (especially sub-saharan) is some of the greatest music our species has created. this is just my outlook but when i rip off bass lines the good ones come from africa.
so while this isn’t a completely electronic tip check out david byrnes (talking heads) afro centric mp3 radio. it seems they post a new set list each month. like many of the random sites i find i got it off the web nerd centric del.icio.us.
i’m not gonna say that every song is the equivalent of a second coming but the set is worth a listen. like all things there are good and bad, but it just feels like there is a little less bad in this stuff than other forms of popular (top40) music.
i can tell this will be my favorite station for a little while. i guess i need to enable streamripper…
also, i forgot about this electronic african comp i picked up a while back. i should post some stuff from that soon.
artist: frikstailers genre: sample splice dance
it definitely has a french cut / splice feel mixed with some nintendo rock for good measure. check out there myspace, pretty much every track is the shit. they will be here for SxSW, see previous post.
fans of daftpunk will enjoy. to the radio it goes.

zizek tour coming to austin for sxsw
during SxSW we are hosting a bunch of electro/minimal/techno cumbia acts from Argentina. i’ll be posting a couple tracks from these artists over the next couple days. to be honest the entire cumbia thing is kinda new to me. i like what i hear.
IMHO, this track has an island dub feel to it. you can go to this site for more info on the scene down there.
cumbia or not, into the radio this song goes: ORO11 - pum pum cumbia
who is playing for their showcase on 3.13.08 @ Ninety Proof Lounge - Austin, TX (SXSW Showcase)?
here is the myspace list
KING COYA & EL TRIP SELECTOR- Release on Nonesuch Records, collaborated with Oscar-winning film score composer Gustavo Santaolalla.
AXEL K SOUNDSYSTEM- Classically-trained multi-instrumentalist, one-man show incorporates elements from jazz, folklore, reggaetón and cumbia.
TREMOR- Film composer, takes traditional folkloric sounds of northern Argentina and adds glitchy percussive elements.
FRIKSTAILERS- The high-energy beats of Rafael Caivano and Lisandro Sona are meant strictly for the dancefloor.
EL REMOLÓN- El Remolón mixes local electronic music with Latin American sounds by using the latest technology available.
ORO11 - Intensifies and modernizes the style of cumbia villera through harder dancehall and Baltimore club beats and the addition of hip-hop and ragga vocals.
artist: jody wisternoff genre: reverb synth pop
i like the washed out leads and pads.

artist: paulo otarte genre: weird techno
it is confusing, there is something dragging but i like it. interesting to see if americans would dance to it in the correct context. thanks to sven vath for finding this one.
artist: the field genre: minimal ableton loop techno
yes, pitchfork is all over this but regardless, believe me it really is a great record. the older crowd will hear coil, orb and orbital influences. so much much so. man, everything really has been done. anywayz, i really like this record. after talking about endlessly at parties i’m finally getting around to posting:
as a side note it looks like Plush will have house every friday, at least for this semester. it was pretty crowed there tonight and fun.
ok yeah, i found this site on delicious: songerize. basically, imagine google but instead you just type in the song you want it starts playing it. i should have thought of that first but songbird does work.
artist: gryphon graham vs ptr bjrn & jhn genre: dance mashup
this is another local austin producer, he sent me a couple of tracks. all of which are on his myspace too.
so yeah… spin this at a party this weekend, i think the kids will like it.
artist: shy child genre: electro rock
big in the uk or somethin

artist: happy panjoma genre: minimal house?
here is a rmx i did for this local trio.
happy panjoma - easy please me (disco hospital rmx)
i see a ghostland post is coming. you know they have a new one coming down the line.
