artist: tepr vs DatA genre: daft punk electro funk style rmx
stop start, stutter, vocode entire song, repeat.
don’t think i posted this before…
artist: pig and dan genre: minimal techno
good stuff, last night at the gym it very adequately blocked out the top 40 dirt spewing from the uniformly placed overhead speakers. usually indie rock has a much wider and consistent frequency range, which is useful for blocking exterior songs out but this entire album is so interesting to listen to in headphones that i never noticed lily allen (that much). hell it even made her sound ok with this running underneath it.
yes it is a long as track.

panjoma will play at elysium this friday. it will be part of the recurring Cyanight events with Dubnautica. i may do a remix of one of their tracks…
this one has an electro-clash dot allison feel to it, have i uploaded of her yet? i guess i should.
artist: kiki and ada genre: morr techno

i heard a lot of this stuff the last time i was at mutek. i really like this stuff, it comes close (in my mind) to a more electronic version of the stuff on morr music.
which, by the way, has been putting the morr back in morrissey since 199X.

in an atypical move i’m going to post more than one artist today in preparation for my foreseen absence.
everyone knows that most music of a genre is simply not that good. how do we measure good? that indeed is a dilemma…record sales (umm…throngs of 13yr olds can’t be wrong). ok hipsters magazines can save us (umm….no, i won’t even name some of the terrible “must have” pitchfork albums out there). maybe radio airplay, no again, that stuff is bought and paid for and focused grouped to death. we can’t really measure what music is good. all in all it the “eye of the beholder” saying stands as the only viable truth in existence. so all one can do is share what they believe is right:
the unknown fruit of my eye in dubstep.
Pinch - Brighter Day
normally i like my eighties covers to be quite a bit different from the original but there is something about this one that works IMHO.
The Chromatics - Running Up That Hill
in the quasi IDM realm, actually this is just a cool “piece” of music.
Kim Hiorthoy - Mandarinerna
and finally in the frenchy electro house category
Bitchee Bitchee Ya Ya Ya - Fuck Friend (Brodinski & Yuksek Remix)
ok, i shall return next week.
i’m actually withholding my favorite track from this days multi-selection. hint is an Ada remix. i mostly convinced that everything he touches is “good”.
HEY, HERE’S A QUICK JOHNGOMI MIX ALL THESE TRACKS ARE ARE FOUND ON THE INTERNET OVER THE LAST 48 HOURS. HAS SOME REMIXES OF THE CAZELS, DAFT PUNK, WHITE STRIPES, ETC. DON’T CRITIQUE DA’ MIX, IT’S JUST SOME QUICK BLENDS & SOME SUPER COOL TRACKS SO, ENJOY.
artist: joakim genre: electro funk
this one bubbles along, yes you have heard that bass before.

artist: marco passarani genre: blip bleep pop
this is a good one, think i’ll always like this stuff. anyone know of a good audio mastering room in austin? also any favorite vinyl pressers out there?

UK dubstep artist head hunter will be here in austin at plush. cheap$3!

artist: matmos genre: sample glitch
valerie solanas is interesting and most likely a direct product of her environment. lesson, don’t work with paranoid schizophrenics. regardless, these words coming from her manifesto certainly sound much more convincing because of her past exploits with firearms. if anything this song exposes a person that history would normally cover up, so go matmos.
her background is unique, her words taken out of context (like in this song) could be construed as alarming. especially to a guy (like myself).

artist: Exponential label comp genre: melodic idm and downtempo
cool cover btw. i was not aware that there was an indie electronic idm downtempo record label in san antonio named Exponential.
FACT i) the founder (ernest gonzales) sent me an email last night stating that they do indeed exist and they are releasing a compilation. i’m listening to a preview right now. ernest also is The Theory of Everything, whom i have seen spin / perform in austin.
OPINION i) which tracks are best? who is to say, all i know is that i’m adding these to radio rotation. i’d like to post more than two songs but i’ll limit myself. Actually i listened to the entire thing two times through now, it is quite good but i have to pick just two so, when it gets released officially i’d like to do another post from some of the other artists.
SONG i) ok ok i’m a bit biased. i love this type of stuff when i’m programming. when the bass line kicks in it feels like afternoon delight, and there is a jazz flute. badass. Rae Davis myspace. well ok it looks like he is an austinite.
rae davis - pyramids
SONG ii) this from the label founder ernest gonzales, i like when IDMers add anything besides keys to their stuff, in this case a guitar is used (i hear a slight bernard sumner influence, especially on his other myspace tracks).
Ernest Gonzales - Caviar Cigarettes Dynamite Laser Beams
OPINION ii) you know, what this CD ain’t bad. i’d definitely download it. i’ll admit i get very worried when i hear the term texas and electronic in the same 15 minutes. i guess it is a bit of a weird reaction because all the people that contribute to this blog are electronic musicians living in texas and i like all their personal studio creations.
FACT ii) from my previous posts i hope it is evident that i loathe record reviews. this is exactly why blogs are so great in a futuristic way. i don’t need to talk that much about it, i can just link to it.
FACT iii) actually these words are for the spiders. if you like Groove Salad or Secret Agent on SomaFM, Baby Mammoth, Dabyre, Prefuse, Aphex Twin, old U-ziq then you will find tracks on this disc you will like. If you like melodic IDM and jazz inspired downtempo then you’ll like this stuff. No drone machine music here, which is ok. advice for Exponention, send this to SomaFM.
FACT iv) i’ve never been motivated to by a comp CD because it was regional, even though a lot of the comp CDs i have bought in my youth were in fact very regional (factory = manchester, nettwerk = vancouver, wax trax = chicago, world serpent = england or something). i just didn’t really know they were regional at the time of purchase. no offense to all the texas electronic musicians out there (i’m one of them) but texas comps typically conjure up music with lots of guitars and not in the norwegian metal fashion.
anywayz, go to Exponential and take look at all the artists myspace pages. if you like what you hear then pick up the CD when it gets released.
After listening to the entire CD i realized that someone took the time to actually layout the songs in a very flowing order.
artist: dabrye genre: idm hip hop
super simple…. i used read mags like pitchfork and wire, then i realized that reading them pissed me off. i mean how many rants you can digest before you finally realize that they are there to entertain you, not inform you. i don’t want entertainment from pitchfork, wire or rolling stone writers (i real read books for that), i want information. that is why i guess i like
philip sherburne
ok ok you say you want entertainment about music in the written form. i guess i’ll need to start book blog…
start with the mixer man chronicles!
if you really wanted to be informed about music you’d go the BLOGOSPHERE or LASTFM and listen. anywayz, one nameless music writer once said something like : “trip hop (dj shadow included) is for white people because it doesn’t have all those annoying guys rapping”… yep.
a friend of mine once said that “hip hop without lyrics is not hip hop”.
i don’t know if i agree with either very paraphrased statements, but regardless here comes some more insturmental hip-hop!
artist: boys noize genre: more of that electro-house sample music
yes, they have a disco ball shaped like a skull.
artist: dj koze genre: downtempo techno
umm… it is a sprawling track. best just listen to it all the way thru.
My Radio - close myspace, it sucks the life out of me. no really.
