VENETIANS SNARES NEW RECORD IS DOPE, HERE’s THE WIKI ABOUT HIM & A COUPLE OF TRACKS OFF THE NEW RECORD CHECK IT OUT!!!
Venetian Snares is the main performing alias of Canadian electronic musician Aaron Funk (born January 11, 1975).
Funk debuted on a record label in 1999 with the 12″ vinyl EP, Greg Hates Car Culture. Prior to this, he self-released material on cassette tape as early as 1992.[1]
From Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Funk is known for making avant-garde electronic music often in odd numbered time signatures (often 7/4). He is an unusually prolific artist, having released records on the History of the Future, Isolate/DySLeXiC ResPonSe, Addict, Zod, Distort, Sublight, Low-Res, Planet Mu and Hymen record labels.

artist: milanese genre: dub grime step hop

this style feels old and new to me. of course i heard plenty of cyberpunk soundtracks for the last two decades. i’ll not say something to the effect that this would be fitting in a william gibson soundtrack. but it does. from what i can make out, the lyric subject matter fits too.
Here’s a slice from Aphex Twin’s live show at this years Coachella

and…..a dubstep tune

Here’s another Starkey tune. This one is the IDM one. You remember IDM don’t you. Just don’t say it outloud
Some IDM heroes from the past are keeping fresh by doing some dubstep. Awesome. its a natural branch /evolution. These guys make me want to hop a plane to Europe just to see them.
artist: distance genre: dubstep

some people seem to like this guy more than Burial. bleak, dark and bass driven = good. the “first there was darkness, then came strength” sample is from where?

After chainsawing some trees in my backyard (literally… not a euphemism for illegal activity), I made my way to my local head shop. The guy behind the counter recognized me from the Bass Nectar show and we had a chat about local electronic music and shows. I couldn’t help but notice what they had playing over the store stereo system. Nothing like getting turned on to some new music at the head shop.

Yea its the weekend coming up and the MBM show is Saturday. So take this as your Friday and Saturday post and someone less hungover than me on Sunday can post:
Starkey
i had a hard time deciding which out of three trks of his to post. he’s got a shed load of mixes here if you want to download some
the single trk i chose has a little of everything thrown in. his other ones are a little more dubstep or idm.
all good.
artist: boxcutter genre: 2 step -> dubstep

the lines get blurred here, the bass experiment continues. this album has quite a few “wordly” sounding instruments. it really feels like an interesting album all the way thru.
Johnny and the peeps for Heavyweight did it up righteous last friday. Great turnout as you can see from the pic. Lots and lots of BASS. If this was outside somewhere, i feel the vibe would have been lost.
Fresh air is for birds, i like getting hotboxed!
Only a few times a year can you find what i like to call the BASS NEXUS.
Shiz is all wobbly and you’ve gone way past the brown note.
Here’s a tune from that night that sounded great on those speakers
Unitz - drop

I was having a lively discussion today with a fellow ElectronicAustinite(?) about dubstep.
Garage was a little too soulful like 80’s soulful House.
Grime always struck me a little cheesy with the synth action.
But dubstep producers have been bringing the menace back.
Not like the ultra-menace that happened to DnB with it’s insanely high BPM rates.
(A hint guys, that drives chicks off the dance floor)
Not some of the frontrunners with “world” instruments hearkening to enlightened vegan-techno-hippies running around in a forest,
but that deep bass menacing groove that makes the headz bob and fire up another spliff
That Caspa show at the 710 on Friday looks quite appealing. If I can get high enough I’ll roll out to it and get my head-bob on….
Here’s an older dubstep trk that has that DnB menace but slowed down,
the vocal is an acappella most producers have on their harddrive, but still pretty cool:
cotti & cluekid – sensi dub
Bonus: Now here is Grime trk i think is pretty cool and has a little menace to it

found another online radio station worth checking out : subfm
so far it sounds pretty fucking excellent, they claim to specialize in grime, dubstep and the like. right now it is more techno-esque. regardless, i just tuned in and it sounds great.
the reason for the post is that Caspa is playing at room 710 (710 red river austin tx). flyer:
they claim to be installing extra sound just for the event. i’ve been there, they will need to. featuring your Weight residents DJ I/O, Tyrant, Innerlign, Sloppy Jackson and Grommit. cover is 5$.

i was just notified about this Dokkebi act, it is next wednesday (12th) at Plush (7th & red river, austin tx). the tunes on myspace sound stellar. “Gook Dub” in particular. incidentally wednesday is the first day of the SxSW music conference.
so to recap:
Live PA from Japan Called Dokkebi Q
